Mary Claire Tillotson
Mary Claire Tillotson is a contemporary abstract landscape painter based in Charlotte, North Carolina. She draws inspiration from the landscapes and memories that have shaped her—from the Blue Ridge Mountains and Carolina pine woods to the shifting light, atmosphere, and fleeting details found in nature. Her work is an exploration of the feeling a place leaves behind.
Working primarily in acrylics, Mary Claire allows color, light, texture, and atmosphere to guide the work. Her paintings balance an immersive, intimate foreground with expansive, dreamlike spaces, inviting the viewer into a particular mood or memory rather than offering a literal representation of a place. Mary Claire studied Fine Arts at Winthrop University before pursuing a career as a trial attorney and raising her family. She returned to her art practice several years ago and has since exhibited locally and internationally, with work represented by galleries in North Carolina and abroad. Her work ultimately seeks to offer what she finds in nature herself: wonder, solace, peace, and a feeling of connection to a place and its memories.
